hi i have avg dfragmenter on and its been running for 2 days making these dots-i would like to use my computer but cant use pages-i unplugged computer and when i started it back up it went right back to defragmenting again-guess i have to wait it out but how long? will it hurt the computer? thanks for any and all help...im sending this from another computer cause i cant use the desktop.

Solution
okay, with networking will do.it just means with internet connection.once in safemode,if you dont see that bloody defrag screen, delete all avg.cheers.
if you are using anything from win7 on,the defragmenter that comes with the os is as good as it gets.there should be an option to stop or cancel the defrag.if not press alt, ctrl, delete to bring up your task manager and end the program from there.

i have windows xp with windows 8 and chrome browser-i tried what you said and it didnt budge-dots still going---i thank you for answering me.im in my 70's and im amazed im remembering some of this lol...

im only 15 years behind you, lol.so you did press alt>ctrl>delete and brought up task manager? once in task manager click on applications and click on end task? sometimes you have to click end task a few times and finally it will say the program is not responding and then you have to choose end program anyway.sorry i cant explain it better.once you have this program off i would get rid of avg and use avast instead.this includes getting rid of the avg toolbar as well.once you shut this program down i can help you with the rest.

ok,heres a shot in the dark.hold the power button until the pc shuts down.then unplug your power supply.once the power supply is unplugged hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds.then plug the power supply back in and try restarting your computer.tell me what happens.no hurry, going to sleep now.back in the morning.

I am soooooooo indebted to you=i did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i hit the f8 and didnt see the without networking so hit back to when running best- and i got my computer back and even a sign from avg said optimization is finished-click finish to end=YOU MY GOOD MAN ARE A GENIUS-AND A GOOD SAMARITAN.I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP.THANK YOU FROM BOOTTOM OF MY HEART.

glad your up and running again.couple of tips tho.i would get rid of avg and install avast antivirus free version.a good companion for your antivirus program would be malwarebytes.there is a free and a paid version that gives you realtime protection and a lifetime licence.its only 24.95 and works like a charm.when defragging i just use the one that comes with windows.something ive noticed is windows 7and 8 need very little defragging unlike xp.stay away from optimizing programs.they can do more harm than good.here are the links for avast and malwarebytes.
