Will USB 3.1 require new mobo, or would a USB 3.1 to PCIe adapter work?

Hi all,

Probably a basic question, but one I can't seem to find the answer to:-

Will USB 3.1 require a new motherboard and/or CPU? Or could you potentially use a USB 3.1 to PCIe adaptor, like I have seen for USB 3?

I am thinking of upgrading soon, but would benefit from USB 3.1. I know it will require new physical USB 3.1 sockets, but I do not know if it is also dependent on your motherboard and CPU. Will it work with current CPUs and motherboards if you then use an adaptor?

Thanks!

Solution
PCIe would work. However, they generally are a little slower than those on the chipset, and can't be used pre-boot.

All motherboards prior to AMD A75 or Intel 7-series chipsets used PCIe chips onboard for USB3.0, and still do for more than what the chipsets supply.

Great! Thanks for that.

Do you have any knowledge on just how much slower?
