I recently built a new system with the following components;
Asus X79 Deluxe Motherboard
Intel i7-4930k LGA 2011
EVGA GTX 780 Graphics card
Corsair Vengence 1866 Ram 32gs
Corsair RM1000 watt PSU
Cooler Master Cosmos II ATX Case
Intel 240g SSD
Western Digital 1TB mechanical drive for storage
ASUS Optical Drive DVD 24x
Corsair H110 Liquid Cooler
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

On the day of the build everything went fine. It booted right up and loaded the OS along with 149 updates. It ran all night and into the next morning, approximately 12 hours, and all was fine. Just after I performed the cable management prior to installing the case doors, I attempted to hook up an old Western Digital mechanical SATA drive in attempts to retrieve the stored data. I powered down the system and hooked up the drive, which was from my previous system and approximately 10 years old, which also suffered from a liquid cooling leak. I hooked up the drive and powered on the system. It attempted to boot and then shut down. It continued to try and start until I switched off the PSU. Now when I press the case power switch the fans spin up for about a 1/2 second and the system immediately shuts down and then tries to restart again.

The motherboard has an onboard power button, however I get the same outcome. This leads me to believe that the case power switch is not faulty. I did the paperclip test on the PSU with only the 24 pin and the 8 pin motherboard connectors removed. When the PSU was turned on all 4 case fans along with the HDDs turned on. So I assume the PSU is not faulty as well. I have attempted to boot with the Graphics card removed as well as various sticks of RAM.

I even tried a different PSU however I got the same results.

I get no POST beeps or anything upon turning on the power to the board. The Power and Reset buttons onboard the motherboard light up however when pressed the board just powers up for that 1/2 second then shuts down.

Since it ran perfectly in the beginning I assume there are no issues with the motherboard shorting against the case. Could the old HDD shorted something out? I immediately removed it and threw it in the trash can.

I am at a loss?

Thanks for any suggestions!

I further tested the PSU with a multi meter and all connectors were within specs, however the grey wire on the 24 pin connection showed only 2.6 volts rather than 5 volts. I did swap out the PSU with a known good one and still nothing. I do have a motherboard speaker attached and can hear no beeps whatsoever. New motherboard and PSU will be delivered in a couple of days. Just don't want to fry anything else in the process.

I do see a lot of posts concerning the CMOS battery. I have removed it with no luck. Is it possible to get a brand new motherboard with a dead battery?

Two simple questions. One, have you removed the old SATA drive and checked the ports that it was connected to for damage? Also, have you tried removing everything but the CPU (I mean even the memory and graphics card) and doing a minimal boot; to see if there is any reaction, like a warning that you have no memory? Then, if you get a response, add pieces bit by bit?

My first guess would be a shorted / broken circuit somewhere, but I obviously can't tell from here.

Thanks for your response. No visible damage to the old SATA drive or the power cable which it was attached to.
I have removed everything except the CPU and have only the 24 pin motherboard connector and the 8 pin CPU connector plugged in. When the power button is depressed the fans spin for 1/2 second and everything shuts down. Approximately 3 seconds later it attempts to restart with the same 1/2 second result. I do have a small case speaker attached to the motherboard adjacent to the "Pwr/reset" header however I hear no beeps. I don't think it is staying powered long enough to reach any type of POST diagnostics.

Could a bad or damaged HDD cause a short within the motherboard. Am I safe just replacing the motherboard alone? Or should I be safe and replace the PSU as well?
