I have an r9 290 Sapphire Radeon graphics card. It has one 6 pin and one 8 pin connector at the top of the card. I only have one spare 6 pin connection at my PSU, but have a cable that is 6 pin at the PSU side and splits into a 6 pin and 8 pin connection at the GPU side. The 6 + 8 pin are intended to supply 75+150=225 watts. Will the single cable that is just 6 pins at the PSU side suffice or *must* I use two separate cables?

What kind of power supply do you have? As long as your psu is good quality and provides enough amps on the 12v rail, the single cable that splits into two will suffice. My psu is the same way and it works perfectly.
