Win 7, or Win 8
Win 8 is slightly faster, and will have longer support.
If you don't mind the interface, get Win8

Myself, I would still go with Win 7.

XP loses support next month, and 64 bit never worked well.
Vista was NEVER good.

Besides being a bit faster, Windows 8 can offer everything windows 7 plus much more. Only old gits can't get over a 25 years old interface which is with no doubt easier to use.

I seriously doubt that win 7 or any operating system can make you computer run hot, or cool.

Some ubuntu versions tend to utilize cpu more than windows 8 so if you just doing normal stuff on your computer like browsing or using some document editor, then with a Ubuntu OS you will may have slightly higher temperatures because windows 8 idle more.
But to get back to our topic, you shouldn't notice the difference on temperatures between windows 8 and xp

I'm old, but without a touch screen, I see no advantage to 8.

Now if I could afford a 27" touch screen, I would probably go with 8
As time goes on, and 7 reaches end of life, even old people will have to adapt.

But that is power saving, when gaming at full load, I don't see how that can help temp.

You don't need a touchscreen. Touch support is something extra in windows 8. Or something that windows 7 don't have if you want. It does not replace anything. It's there for anyone that wants to take advantage of that.

Yes, It shouldn't affect temperatures at full load.

I know you don't need a touch screen.

It dose replace the start menu, and the new updates don't bring it back.
In fact the way they did it is kind of an insult to users intelligence.

It is just a button the doesn't really do anything.
The aftermarket menus do a better job.

I'm not arguing for or against, just laying out the facts.
I've never had a problem with other operating systems, as I have also used Linux for over 25 years.
Not an expert though, and you really don't have to be with Linux anymore.
