My MSI 780 ti gaming is making a rattling noise sometimes.

Hello. My MSI 780 ti gaming recently started making a low rattling noise. Any idea what this is? My PC froze up two times about a week ago, right around when this noise started.
PC hasn't froze up since then. Also, about three or four weeks ago I started hearing a low coil whine from card when I was playing Call of Duty Ghosts. It's weird but I have not heard the coil whine (atleast I don't think so)
since this rattling noise started. Someone newegg made a review for the card and said he also had rattling noise and the card was excreting some oily substance from the fans when they were above 80% speed. I've opened the PC up and checked the card and its fans but did not see any oily substance.

Also, the card started making this rattling noise when I was playing the game Thief. I couldn't figure out what was causing it to do this so I tried changing settings and when I changed the buffering from double buffer to triple buffer the noise stopped, for a while, but later it came back.

Any ideas? Thanks

It's definitely a bearing problem the way you're describing it. I had a similar experience myself.
Try oiling the fans first, that'll confirm if there is just too less lubricant, or it's broken in there. You can find some videos on youtube. Just search 'fix noisy computer fans'.
If it's broken, then if it's under warranty, send in for a replacement. Otherwise you'll have to buy a fan.

So that is what is happening to my card? I honestly can't even tell you what I'm hearing. I say rattling because I read that review and it doesn't sound like the coil whine the card was making a few weeks back. I'm trying to figure out a way to describe the sound but I can't. The only thing I can tell you is that it's very low and continues happening for a short while even after I turn off a game. Should I ask for RMA now?

I'm not 100% sure but my hard drive never made this sound before. I also have an SSD but it never made a peep before (not sure if ssds make any noise at all or not). I wasn't sure myself about where the noise was coming from, at first I thought it was the card but then it sounded like it was coming from the front of the PC where the HDD is but when I put my ear close to left side (Corsair Carbide 500r case) the noise was most prevalent there. I'm going to open up the PC now and take a look. If I don't see any oily substance on the card I'll try taking it out and looking at it from the bottom.

The guy who complained about this on newegg had bought two of these. Both were leaking oil or grease but only one was making the rattling noise.
He said it only did so when he spun up the fans to over 80%. They would spray the oil in a 360 degree all over his PC. I'll check mine now.

I have no clue why my PC froze up like that last week I just hope it doesn't happen again.

Mine was a similar scenario. I have a HDD and a SSD, so when the noise started, I tried removing my HDD and the noise was there(if your HDD is making a noise, it'll make a screeching sound similar to what the tip of a nail will make on a CD. It's basically the head touching the platter, and it means your HDD is dying or already dead. In such cases, it's usually too late to make a backup. And no, SSD's don't make any sounds at all; even when failing).

So I ruled out the HDD. That left only the case fan and PSU fan. I stopped the case fan with my finger; noise still there. So it was the PSU fan.

Ok I'll try that. I brought over the PSU and HDD from my old Alienware Aurora so they are about five years old. It's not a screeching sound though and it only happens when I'm playing a game and for a few minutes after I turn the game off. I wish I could put this sound in words =/.

Did you check out the video? It's in my second last post(excluding this one).

yea sorry, I just checked it and it doesn't sound anything like that. It's much lower and it kinda sounds like two pennies lightly tapping each other, something like that I dunno lol but it's def not what that xbox was doing. I took of the side door and loaded up Crysis 3 with max settings and 4XTXAA.
After about 10 minutes the noise started but it was very faint and I could not tell where it was coming from. Max temp for the card was 71 degrees, normally under load this card runs anywhere from 50-65 degrees but very heavy games like Crysis 3 will push it to 70-71. Also, the door has a big fan and I took the door off so. Anyway, I'm going to load up another game that I know will make that sound happen and see if I can catch where it's coming from.

Turns out its my Noctua cooler. NH-D14. With the side panel off, I put my ear to the center of the PC and heard the noise coming from the cooler. I didn't realize it was the cooler before because with the panel on, I couldn't tell if it was the card or the cooler or even the PSU maybe. Well now I know it's definitely the cooler and I've been testing with a few different games for the last half hour and I have heard the noise but only for a short time and it was very low. My guy at the computer store put this rig together for me and recently installed this cooler so I'll ask him about it. I can live with the noise but I'd rather not. I'm just glad it's not something worse. Thanks for the help :)

BTW, if it's a faint hum, then nothing is wrong with your cooler. It's just that if the fans are spinning very fast, they vibrate and that causes the chassis to vibrate, causing the hum. Happens in my PC. Very annoying!
It's not a technical issue. It's just hard work.
