I am trying to install a graphics card in my sons computer. It is a Dell 660. The specs on the Dell are:
Intel® Core™ i5-3330 (3.0GHz, 6MB Cache)
8GB Memory (DDR3, 1600MHz)
1TB Hard Drive (7200RPM)
DVD+/-RW Drive
USB 3.0 and 8-in-1 Media Card Reader (HSSD, SD, MMC, MS, MS-PRO, xD, MMC Plus, SDHC)
Wireless-N
Windows® 8

However, this is the second card. I thought the first card I got did not work so I sent it back. But the second is replicating the exact symptoms.

The monitor I have is also a Dell and it has both VGA and DVI connectors available. When using the DVI on the new graphic card to the monitor it is as if the cable is not connected. Because I see the Dell self check diagnostics, that is only visible when no cables are connected Where if I use the VGA to the onboard graphics connector I never see that diagnostics menu.

Anyway, how can I get this new graphics card to work in a Dell 660? Dell is telling me that the computer does not support anything other than their cards that they sell on their website. Can this really be true? Or hopefully there is a workaround to get another type of graphics card to work.

Or are Dells built so that only the cards they sell work on their systems? Please tell me this is not the case and that I can get this new card to work on a Dell 660.

This newest card I have by MSI and it is a GTX 760.

It was posted over at another thread here for the Dell 660 here:

Dell cards will only work with dell computers because they have preinstalled drivers. But man are you rich, 'm 14 and i only have an ipod. I don't understand why kids need their own compters.

If you haven't upgraded your PSU then its probably the cheap psu that came in the dell not cutting it. If you have a decent psu that you installed then good chance you just need to change the settings in the bios from integrated graphics to a stand alone card.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I also upgraded the power supply to support this graphic card. I installed a Corsair CX600M. it is rated at 600w and 46amps. The card recommends 500w and 30A. So this new PS should be good.

I don't see the option of changing any settings for the integrated graphics in the BIOS.

Well then my 1st guess is that the settings in the bios have it set to use the integrated graphics. Browse the bios settings and see if you can find a setting that lets you choose between integrated graphics/onboard graphics and something like PCI-E graphics. Will need to change it from integrated/onboard option to a PCI option

A card cannot come preinstalled with a driver. Please don't misguide people. Drivers are installed in a system folder. Otherwise vendors would not have shipped driver discs.

That is a possibility, but that also results plainly in a blank screen.

My son and I did install the graphic driver from the supplied CD. Does Dell really make PCs so that only the cards they sell can work?

The card is showing in Device Manager. Where it says under the General tab "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code43)"

That's not possible for Dell to do. If Dell were an OEM(original equipment manufacturer; the people who actually fabricate the card's PCB) for graphics cards, sure. But not as a third party.

Try installing the card's drivers from the website. Which card is it?
Can you log on to windows if you connect your monitor cable to the graphics card?

It is an MSI GeForce GTX 760 GAMING ITX 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 from Newegg.

No it is as if the cable is not connected to the monitor at all using the DVI on the graphics card.

Alls fine using the VGA to the onboard connector and integrated HD graphics.

posting back an update for anyone else that might have experience with their graphics card not working.

called dell support and a suggestion was to re-seat the RAM. So pulled both sticks and then re-installed.

works now.

funny that the fan on the video card was spinning before as if it was active, but acting as if the DVI cable was not even connected between the graphics card and monitor, absolutely nothing. But the onboard graphics via the VGA was working, just not the card(s) in the PCI slot using the DVI.

but working now after the RAM re-seat.
