Modem and Router bandwidth Issue

I am currently with Shaw as my ISP with BB100 plan.

When they came and set everything up they gave me an SMC Modem/router. After a month or so I got tired of the crappy wireless the smc put out so I bought a linksys ac1900 router. I also knew before hand that I needed to call shaw and get them to switch the smc modem/router from gateway mode (modem AND router) to bridge mode (just acts as a modem). They needed to do it from their end being it was a firmware thing that they had locked down. After they finished and I got the new router installed and working I noticed I was getting crappy bandwidth. Doing some speedtests I noticed my connection was acting like there was a cap right around 10.5 Mbps. And thats from a 100Mbps connection. I ended up phoning shaw back and enquiring as to what was going on and they had me do a bunch of troubleshooting steps that I had already done on my own. Through the techs little troubleshooting he had me bypass the router and connect directly to the smc modem. All of a sudden I had great speeds again (75 Mbps). Reconnecting the router causes the bandwidth to get capped at that 10.5 Mbps mark.

My question is... what is causing the cap within the router. Its capped whether I am using wireless or a wired connection. Ive looked through the router settings and nothing is popping out as out of place or odd. Is it the modem not playing nice with the router? Is the router not playing nice with the modem? Is it the router itself... I am at a loss.

I might also add that the upload speeds stay the same at 5.5 Mbps whether I am connected directly through the modem to my pc or through the router... Just the download bandwidth changes.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Can you make sure the SMC Modem/Router is really in bridge mode? One way to test is to go into your new router and record the IP address it shows on its WAN interface (the IP coming from the SMC) to what this says your IP is: http://www.whatismyip.com/
If they are different then your SMC is not in bridge mode and that can be a problem. If they are the same then we will need to look elsewhere.

After restoring the router to default settings once it didn't help and I ended up screwing around with the settings. Then I restored the defaults once more and BAM! I had my full connection again. Problem solved. Thanks though.
