Brother MFCJ410W - Black ink not printing. Not used for four months. Tried cleaning methods. Other inks printing fine. Tried printing when selected inkjet paper or photo paper (used plain paper though) & seemed to print fine. Will not print black when plain paper selected. Suggestions appreciated.

If you run the clean cycle on the printer every 2 days, you'll run out of ink very quickly. Ink jets will simply clog after a while of sitting there, but having it run a clean cycle will just drain the ink.

I don't think it will just clan out the print heads every 2 days on it's own, did the Brother tech support say that? Normally you have to force it to do a cleaning as that uses up ink.

Forced 91% alcohol in tube attached to nipple where cartridge goes into printer. Let stay there overnight to clean additionally. If it had dried ink clogging it, why would it print when I selected other than plain paper. If it were caused by not getting ink, it would not print on plain paper, when I selected inkjet paper or photo paper.

Did you select different print options when you printed on the other paper? Inkjets can print back two ways, either the black ink tank or by mixing all the other colors, depending on the print options used.

This is from HP's site:
"There are several circumstances when color ink may be used&mdah;primarily to improve print quality, and sometimes to improve printer reliability—even if the document appears to be only black text-and-graphics. Many HP printers utilize chemical interactions to improve the quality and permanence of plain paper black text-and-graphics by adding small amounts of color ink to certain black areas. Some dark images which look black may contain a combination of black and color inks. For black and white images and photos, a blend of colors called "composite black" may be used to achieve significantly better image quality and smoother gray tones than can be accomplished with black inks alone. Some inkjet printers utilize pigmented black ink, which is incompatible with some inkjet photo paper. In this case, dark or black areas are made up of color inks. (Page yield testing is conducted with all cartridges black and color installed in the printer. For more information see Inkjet page yields . "

I visited with Brother support this afternoon and they also mentioned that the machine was probably combining other colors to make the page appear to have been printed in black when actually the black cartridge was not being used. They thought my difficulty was the blocked black and since I had tried different things to unblock dried ink, I could send it to a service center. But I felt it was better to purchase a similar new machine and save money. I also plan to leave it turned on all the time so it will clean itself about every two days - especially needed when we spend 4 months in Florida during the winter. This time with it shut down this year I believe is what caused it to clog up. I thank the individuals that provided suggestions to remedy the situation.

I have already realised from my purchase of a MFC-J5620DW that the black ink is different to the other cartridges in MFC's in the fact that it is a pigment based ink instead of the dye based inks in the others. If you do not flush the print head prior to non use of the machine for an extended period do not expect it to print black again.

Also you should not allow any cartridges to run dry especially the black, because you will have a hell of a job head cleaning to get them all functioning perfectly again.

This goes for most inkjets but especially so for those that use pigment based inks.
