I have seen tons of videos and a picture walk-through and I know I only need to use the size of a grain of rice but the thing I'm confused is some people use plastic and rub the thermal compound evenly over cpu and some just put a rice sized amount and put heatsink on top without spreading it even. What is the best method?

This is my build if you need to know parts. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3a2BX

Solution
Just place it in the center the heatsink's pressure will spread it across the surface of the cpu where it is needed. As long as the contacting surface of the heatsink is relatively smooth and flat mind you.

Alright I'm reading how to apply it to to my cpu and it says,

"Since heat from the CPU core or cores
travel directly through the metal cap through the compound to the heatsink, it is
much more important to have a good interface directly above the core or cores
than it is to have the metal cap covered with compound from corner to corner/"

Thanks for your reply!

Ya I spread it out...fuck...was two days ago but temps are fine. Definitely going to clean cpu/heatsink and apply a new application and NOT spread it out....
