Make sure you are properly saving your webpage by following below instructions:
Click on orange tab with Firefox written on it on the upper left most side -> Click Save Page As
now choose the location and save it. Try opening now. If nothing happens, restart your pc and try again.

Many thanks for your help. I did try and saved a test link as your instruction and when I went back and click on the saved link still uploading the default page which is Ask home page instead of the page I saved which is www.bbc.co.uk

if you always want to load "www.bbc.co.uk" when you open the browser, then do the following:
Go to Firefox button > Click Options > In General Tab > Under Startup heading go to When Firefox starts and choose the option of Show my Home page > Go to Home Page option in next line and enter www.bbc.co.uk in that > Click Ok.
Restart Firefox.

Thanks again. BBC hyper link was given as an example Over the years I created all my shortcuts on the desktop in different folders with different subject areas. I have hundreds of shortcuts were working until few days ago. I usually create these shortcuts by click right mouse and New and select shortcut. If I do this now to create a new short cut this way, I still when I click on it it would take me to the default site rather than the actual hyper link I created. All the hundreds of the shortcuts I created so far are behaving the same way!!!!

Thanks

Ok, if you have any other web browser installed on your machine try to make that browser as your Default Browser(Not Firefox). After that try opening with other browser or Firefox by Right Click and Open with Firefox. Doesn't work still?
Then redo the default browser setting after temporarily setting another browser as the default browser.

Thanks so much for your help

I did try before to make IE as my default and it did work but when I tried to open with option...
right on the shortcut and choose open with instead the open with option is missing from the IE icon. So I tried to add a line to the icon property such as:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe" www.bbc.co.uk and also tried different format but still did not work.

I suppose I have to live with having IE as my default browser

You have been so patient with me ... well appreciated

just try these last 2 things before quitting.
1. Reset preferences: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-preferences-fix-problems
2. Reinstall your Firefox browser.

Thank you

I tried many times to reset firefox and I have just now reset preferences but still not working. Before I reinstall Firefox what if I tried to change the Reg which I am a bit reluctant to do so:

Trying to bring open with back by changing creating the following file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With]
@="{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}"

What do you think?

i am not good with editing things with registry, if you are sure then you can go ahead on your own. That is all i could offer.

Just to let you know that I have a fresh installation of Firefox and the problem is still here. I am totally agree with you that it is may be not a good idea to mess about with the registery. So I have accepted to live up with this problem until a new version of Firefox appear.

Thanks again for all your help well appreciaed
