My current build is a phenom ii x4 945/ evga gtx 760 sc acx/ msi 970a-43g/ 8gb gskill sniper/

I've read from numerous sources that the mobo I have has issues with CPUs and heat since the vrm has no heat sync. I really don't want to get a new mobo when I get a new cpu so any suggestions would be great.

I'm willing to bet at least part of that is related to the vrm's not having a heat sink. The best 95W AM3+ is the FX-6300 and it still is a decent CPU. Any better and your in the 125W FX-83XX or FX-6350

The fx8300 is 95w but I'm not sure if it has problems with my mobo or not. I've read people having good performance with the fx6300 but I haven't seen anyone with the fx8300 paired with my mobo so I'm hesitant on getting it. I would perfer an 8 core but what ever works better for the mobo

I hadn't noticed that before thanks for pointing it out. According to MSI all FX should work so that ought to work for you.

The 6300 has slightly better single threaded and the 8300 obviously has better multi threaded so I guess it comes down to which one you want.

I'll just be gaming but do you think the newer games coming out are going to need 8 cores for maximum settings. Watch dogs requirements for maximum is an 8 core. It seems unlikely that it will actually need that but idk

Honestly I don't think it matters as their minimum is an old quad core so I think either way you will be fine. Most people who will be playing the game will fall somewhere in the middle anyway. The power draw should be the same between those two 95W chips but I am not sure.
