I am currently building a new PC and noticed that after securing the heat sink to my CPU some thermal paste is on the silver bracket holding the CPU in place. I do not know if the thermal paste leaked into other places it shouldn't be as I have not removed the heat sink to check. Every part is brand new, and the computer has not been started yet.

Here are two pictures to illustrate my potential problem.

1. I am wondering if this is a problem or not.

2. If it is a problem, what is the best way to fix it?

Let me know if I need to provide more information.

Solution

You can get special cleaner for it, or use Isopropyl alchohol from any drug store or grocery store. Only use a little bit mentioned above. All its doing is transfering heat and filling the micro cracks and making the connection between the heatsink and CPU. To much actually insulates the processor and creates more heat. With thermal compound 'less is more'

I obviously made some type of error, and I realize that. I am wondering if I should remove the heat sink and clean the CPU. If I should then what should I clean it with?
