I am required by the company I am working for to upgrade my computer to meet their "aging" standards. None of my hardware is that old IMO but that apparently doesn't count. Consequently I am getting a new motherboard, processor and RAM. Apparently the rest of my equipment meets their standards. My problem is this: I can't be down for an extended period so I am trying to get prepared for this change software-wise. I keep seeing conflicting data on the site about what to do get the computer up and running again. My current motherboard is an Intel D975XLAG1 with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB RAM. My new board will be an MSI A55M-E33 with an AMD Dual-Core A^-5400K and 2GB RAM. What to do to get it right the first time?

Sure, you can install on as many machines as you like provided only one at a time. You'll have to activate over the phone I suspect, as your new Mobo will be recognised as another PC, making M'soft think you're trying to install on two.. you will be asked 'how many' when you activate....

Hmm! Boards couldn't be more 'different'! However, assuming you are running Win8, you will almost certainly find it is resilient enough to cope with the change. Simply boot with your HDD connected to your new board and update any missing drivers from the MSI site once the dust settles. Check Device Manager for any yellow exclamation marks...
You will probably find that Windows won't activate, but this should be achieved using telephone activation as long as Windows didn't come pre-loaded on the desktop.

Sounds OK to me. Just didn't want to run into problems I couldn't handle. I am using Win 8.1, but it was a free upgrade to the WIN 8 that I bought off the web (legally). Will Microsoft still provide activation?
