Hi! I’ve been thinking to get a 13” rMBP, since it seems like it’s the computer that best fits my needs, although I’d like to know about some Windows options that are similar in everything but price!
Thanks for your help! :)
1. What is your budget?
Less than $1,500 since I’m looking for a cheaper alternative to a 13” rMBP.
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
14” would be lovely, although 13” is good enough
3. What screen resolution do you want?
At least 1440x900, I’m using it for photo and video editing so I’d rather push for color trueness rather than a super high resolution, especially with Windows bad management of QHD
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
It’s gonna be my main computer so, a light and small desktop replacement would be good
5. How much battery life do you need?
At least 6 hrs
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
I’d do light game playing, not really looking for a game machine
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
I’m studying visual communications, I do extensive photo editing (I work on that 4 or 5 days a week) and some light video editing (HD, no more than 15 minutes length), I’d love to be able to do both while also playing music on iTunes and having Chrome and Skype open and not having lag on what I’m doing. Also, I’d rather have a graphics card for multimedia rather than games, if any at all. Other than that, I’d do extensive word processing, web browsing and watch movies or tv series from Netflix.
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
250 is good, as long as is speedy enough while rendering
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
Not really
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
4 or 5 years would be ideal
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
None
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
No biases on this side.
13. What country do you live in?
Mexico, would be able to buy an US computer if it’s a popular model.
14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
Two of the laptops I’ve considered are HP ENVY TouchSmart 14-k111nr (or a version of it with a QHD screen and a 750GB HDD for 1,299) and Lenovo y450p (with an intel 4700MQ, NVidia GT755M, 8gb of ram, 1tb HDD and an 1366 x 768 screen, for the same price). I’ve also kept in mind the 13” MBA, although I’m not sure if processor and graphics would be enough for video editing.

[strike]I can vouch for the Sony Vaio Pro 13. It's an ultrabook with similar specs to the Macbook Air, (i5-4200U, 8GB, 128GB PCIE SSD, 1920x1080 IPS LCD, Intel HD 4400). I believe you can customize it on Sony website. It is exceptionally portable and is probably the lightest notebook in its class. There's also an optional slice battery available, but you should be able to reach 6-8 hours of battery time with the main battery only. Last time I checked, its price was around 1100 US. [/strike]

Edit: I withdraw this suggestion, as I learned that Sony will be exiting the notebook market and I have no idea what will become of their existing products.

Being an ultrabook, it's by no mean a powerhouse. It uses the ultra low voltage i5-i7, which are quite a bit slower than their regular mobile equivalent. Depending on your usage and software it could be sufficient. Something like a i7 4500U should be comparable to the regular, (mobile) i5.

If you want something a bit more powerful, look at the Acer V7. It has a 14" FHD IPS display, a Core i5 or i7 CPU (low voltage variants again), and a dedicated GPU (Nvidia GT 750M), all for around 1200$.

Thanks to both for your responses, from all the computers you suggest the Acer V7 seems like the better option, between the graphics card, screen and all the ports. My biggest concern is if the ULV processor is enough to run things like HD editing with Media Composer or Pinnacle. Thanks for your response guys :)

Hi again, I looked a little more at the Acer V7 and apart from the fact that it's out of stock in almost every store, I'm concerned about build quality, specially since I want a more lasting model and from reviews it seems like this particular model isn't build to last. I'd appreciate any further suggestions.
Lenovo T440s seems also like a great option but it's definetely out of my price range, once you add 8gb RAM and a SSD drive, even on market. Is there anything else along the lines of the T440s or the V7? Once again, thanks!

The Lenovo Thinkpad series is aimed at professional users, and is hence in its own league in terms of build quality. There are a few equivalents from other brands, like the HP Elitebooks (and ZBooks) and the Dell Latitude. The "Slim" models will usually be pretty conservatively equipped, while the regular models will be thick and heavy (many will also have crappy displays as a bonus).

If you don't care much for the discrete GPU, I would advise you to forget the Acer. The T440s would be a better option, I believe. On Lenovo's website, the T440s with the Core i7 and 1080p IPS display cost 1350$. I think you can upgrade the RAM and hard drive yourself for much less than advertised on their website.

There's also the Dell XPS, which seems pretty close in terms of features and price to the T440s, but in 13". Other than that there are also a few Asus Zenbooks that could be worth looking into. This one looks pretty interesting (Never seen this particular model, you'll have to look for some reviews): i7, Intel HD 5000 graphics, fullHD IPS display, 8GB, 256GB SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231651

I also suggest you look a this forum, if you haven't already, for more suggestions: http://forum.notebookreview.com/what-notebook-should-i-buy/
