Hello, I am a 1st time builder. I have my components all picked out, will order shortly. What OS should I use? I know XP is fastest, but would 7 be more practical? I would consider 8 but I have heard it is not good for video editing (what I am building for) and just isn't as good as 7?

CPU Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core
Motherboard Asus Z87-A ATX LGA1150
Memory G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600
Storage Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB 2.5" SSD
Storage Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Video Card Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X 4GB
Case Cooler Master Elite 431 Plus (Black) ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply XFX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V
Optical Drive LG BH16NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer

Solution
8 is theoretically very slightly faster. Many people hate the interface, though.

7 is basically the same speed, with a nice interface.

I'd avoid XP - it's about to be dropped and doesn't have much support.

Admirable
i would go with 7

win 8 and 8.1 does have a 5% boost for gaming performance but it also has poor third party device and driver support. and if you like playing older games alot will not run with out modifications and headaches. win 7 is widely supported and by the time it loses support/driver advantages a new more superior os will be out.

Windows 9.

Seriously though, just go with the cheapest one. Their difference isn't really worth anyone going crazy about. It's all good once you get used to it, besides Microsoft is planning on updating Windows 8.1 to be more friendly towards keyboard user. In addition, there are currently rumors out there that Windows 7 might not receive DirectX 12 support, a rumor.

Good luck.
