CPU overheating, not sure if readings accurate

Hi! This is my first post here.

So my computer has been weird for a while now. It shuts off sometimes during gaming, and when I restart says 'CPU over temperature error'. The shutoff point is 80 degrees celcius. But it shuts down at strange times. Like, for example I can play Bioshock Infinite at full ultra no problems, Overgrowth, Star Conflict all are fine. But it overheats on things like Minecraft, AC4BF, BF4, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot etc. And upon further inspection the motherboard, right after a CPU overheat of 80C, was sitting at 30C. I don't know if that's normal but it seems off to me. Are the readings accurate, or is the temp. sensor broken or something? Thanks in advance.

My PC spec:
AMD FX6300 CPU
AMD Radeon HD 7850
I run a 1600x900 LCD display
4GB RAM

Thanks again :)

i wouldnt see why it is wrong. are you using a stock cooler? do you have adequate case ventilation?

games like minecraft and AC are not good at utilizing many cores. and they tend to heat up 1 or 2 core. which causes your computers shut off.

@SR-71 Blackbird Not sure, how could i check?
@babachicken stock cooler, decent ventilation
@matt20020 not overclocked

it doesnt feel hot at all though, barely even warm air coming out of the case..

EDIT: i have tried HWmonitor, can't even see the temp so these readings are in the BIOS.

you arent going to feel it coming out of the case. ok how about you try this. take the side off of your computer. then turn it on and do some gaming, if your computer shits off, then touch the heatsink and if it is REALLY hot then there is a problem, if it feels cool, then there is a problem.

well as of now there really is nothing you can do. monitor your core temperature using coretemp and tell me if your see any discrepancies.

Ok. So I opened my case, ready to do some gaming and see if it would overheat. It didn't! So as of now I'm trying to compare idle temps with side on vs. side off, will get back to you on the readings.

Right. Seriously confused. I jacked the fan settings up to Turbo so it's cooler, then did the tests. Idle 58C with side off. But somehow, for some reason, idle 54C with side on! So I'm really considering the possibility of a broken sensor. Any thoughts?

These temps are in BIOS by the way.
