I have an older Creative 5.1 computer speaker system that I would like to hook up to a newer computer. Is there an adapter around that will take an HDMI signal from the computer and split it into the old 3 channel (think sound card output) stereo jacks?

I wish the solution was that simple. Unfortunately, the computer I want to use is an ASUS tablet, and only has HDMI and earphone jacks.

That's not really a "computer", although technically you can call anything with electronic or even mechanical processing of numbers a "computer". There is a huge difference between tablets and computers.

For the tablet, since the hardware is different, you should talk to ASUS support about what options they have for the sound output to an external speaker system or just do a web search for your model for what's out there. The headphone jack should work also, although you'd lose any surround sound options.

Thanks Hang-the-9 for your feedback. I realize that an ASUS tablet isn't much of a "computer", I'm just trying to take advantage of the hardware I have. I figure a small tablet with self powered speakers makes for a fair internet radio for my shop. And, maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. Seems I've seen HDMI to audio and video splitters, I was hoping for one that uses the small jacks that would plug into the base speaker unit rather than the RCA jacks they all seem to have. Maybe I need to be looking for RCA to whatever the small jacks are called, adapters.

If you're just trying to use the speakers to get audio out of the system, using the built-in headphone jack would be the most obvious and simplest solution. Not sure why you'd even think of using HDMI for this. There are many adapters to convert the headphone output to whatever audio jacks you need.
