Reboot into SAFE MODE. Run the System Restore to back when it was working. See if that helps correct the Profile being corrupt.

power on computer. Pressing F8 repeatedly after you hit the power switch, dont' stop till you see the menu (no 'WINDOWS' logo should appear) select SAFE MODE. Click on the ORB (the circle bottom left corner), type restore and you will see System Restore at the top of the list, click it and follow the prompts.

Unless your computer been taken over by malware, and at that point, if your so "completely numpty" you can choose A) buy a new laptop (i3 @Walmart for general use $249) or B) take it for service (Best Buy just to LOOK, not FIX, $149 + any costs to 'fix it')

Thanks for that, Id be surprised if malware has got on as 1) I am signed on as another user and everything is completely fine and 2) Ive got a bought security system on it.
I did the F8 and selected Safe Mode but there was no orb so couldnt type restore :(

You have no START menu/Orb in bottom left corner? Did you drag your mouse and see if it 'pop up' as hidden? Press the WINDOWS icon key on your keyboard? IF still no sounds like the computer is trashed, and well back to my other suggestion at this point.

Boot into safe mode, press Win+R when you're in the desktop. Then type in 'msconfig'. Now go to the Tools tab and scroll down to find Sytem Restore. Launch it, and you know the rest ;)
