I have a discreet graphics card that has only dvi and mini hdmi plugs however my monitor only has dvi and display port. My motherboard has all connectors. Can I plug the display port cable into my motherboard and then my monitor? Or does my video cable have to be coming from my graphics card in order to be using those graphics (rather than the onboard graphics)?

You should be able to get a mini-hdmi to Displayport cable that would be your best bet as the two standards are decently similar. Either that or you will need an Hdmi to displayport with an hdmi adaptor. But yeah it will need to be connected to the dedicated GPU.
