Hi I do not know a lot about the steam box and I was just wondering if its the same as building a custom pc like picking out parts to your liking

There is no 'Steam box' yet.
SteamOS is simply a Linux variant, optimized for Steam and some of the games available via Steam.

Building a box for that is no different than building a Windows or Linux box. Just get something beyond the minimum recommended, and you'll be fine.

Just realize that SteamOS is not fully cooked yet.
