How to apply thermal paste?

Hi, I am a first time builder. I am probably going to start a large debate on how to apply thermal paste, but here we go anyway. What is the 'most reliable' way to apply thermal paste? I just want to assure that however I apply it, it won't crash my whole build. Thank you!

Firstly it's usually best to follow the CPU's manufactures instructions but I believe most will advise that applying a "dab" to the center of the CPU and then installing the heat sink squarely is the preferred method.
