WD40EZRX-00SPEB0 Ticks Every Minute (SMART Reports It)

I installed one of these about a month ago and every minute like clockwork, the drive would emit a kind of loud "click." Not the louder "click of death" but I didn't want to take any chances so I got another one (returning the old one to WD). The replacement is the exact same 00SPEB0 firmware. It does the ticking sound every minute also! My Acronis Drive Monitor program that shows quite a few SMART values in real time is showing the Load/Unload Cycle Count going up by one each minute. Temperature and all other values are fine. It does this noise when unpartitioned (brand new out of the box), partitioned with full formats of each partition (readied for data storage), and then when data is on the drive. I did full chkdsks on the first drive with a ton of data loaded on it and chkdsk reported zero problems (four partitions total - all were OK). This WD Green drive is to be a backup drive for a WD Black 4.0TB drive which by the way does NOT make clicking noises and its Load/Unload Cycle Count is still at zero.

Has anyone else encountered this? I'm going to lookup the "load/unload" for what it means but it sure seems like the drive should not be doing that, right?

Thanks!

is the same...?

How to Adjust Intellipark's Timer
1. Download the WDIDLE3 ISO image and burn it to a CD/DVD.
2. Ensure that your SATA controller is set to IDE mode from the BIOS.
3. Boot from the CD/DVD, it should take you into DOS.
4. In DOS prompt, type: "wdidle3 /S300" to change the default timer from 8 seconds to 300 seconds (5 minutes).
5. In DOS prompt, type: "wdidle3 /R" to verify the results.

First, thank you very much for the lead on this problem/bug. I'm moving all the data off of the WD Green drive and the load/unload cycle counter is at 15538 and counting up by one as each exact minute of time goes by.

I haven't yet followed your supplied links (thanks again for that) but will increasing the default timer to 300 seconds prevent it from happening in the future? Or, it will just happen every 300 seconds then?

I'll follow the links and educate myself now.
