I have searched for hours and can't find a fix. Can't connect to specific wifi network with 8.1 desktop

I have searched and searched for many hours for a fix and can't find one that works. I have an 8.1 desktop with a USB wifi b/g/n adapter. It works perfect on other networks, but this one at my house will not work at all. It tries to connect and says "can't connect to this network".

At this point I have tried everything from restarting to reinstalling drivers and disabling Windows firewall. I've even done netsh commands to clear tcp/ip stacks.

Someone please help me on this. I'm at a total loss.

The wifi adaperfect is Edimax EW-7811 Un. The router is a new gear g band router. I don't know the model name or have access to it because I'm in a dorm. I am posting this from my phone on the wifi network that I'm trying to connect to. My friend's MacBook connects, my phones connect, and my desktop and laptop used to connect last week but now neither do. They are both 8.1 and have been since release.

Can you elaborate more on the Ubuntu option? How will that fix anything for my windows pc?

Update: I woke up this morning and was able to connect right up. I worked online for about an hour and had to restart my computer for another reason. Now it won't connect again. I am right back where I was before
