I will be on skype, gaming, recording and have a browser open at the same time. Pairing it with 16gb of ram, this should be a multitasking beast! I'm not using intel, as they aren't brilliant at multitasking, probably using an R9 280x or R9 290. Do youu think I should just get an FX 8350 with a noctua NH-D14 and overclock the hell out of it? That would be considerably cheaper than the FX 9590, and cheaper than the FX 9370? (note these cpus come with no cooler)

More about : 8350 9370 9590

None of those. The fx 8320 is the best choice, get a better MOBO and CPU cooler for the money you save.

Also that isn't really multitasking, skype is low-resource application, most tabs will most likely be idling gaming and recording will mostlikely be stacked.

What is your budget for the entire build, we might be able to provide a better build.

"Not brilliant at multitasking" is a completely inaccurate statement, but OK.

If those are your choices, get an FX8350 and a good cooler and overclock it. That's all the 9590 and 9370 are, they are good yield 8320/8350 chips with high stock overclocks and insane power requirements.

Gaming is going to be the only thing demanding the most of your resources there. Skype and recording and a browser is not "multitasking" and an i7 will run circles around the 8350 at most of those tasks. If you were doing video editing/rendering/etc., maybe you might have a case... but you're doing almost entirely single-thread work there, and Intel beats AMD every day at single-threaded applications.

£700-800

I want to record/edit videos and game at ultra. I already have two 500gb hard drives, and a windows 7 license. I don't mind adding a CPU cooler at a later date, I already have this build theorised. My friend went out and bought an ASUS saber-tooth with his FX 8320 and it won't clock over 3.8Ghz. I will also be running a server, minecraft and other games. Running a server on my current i3 2120 and 4gb of ram is pushing it to say the least. By the way, any build that you suggest, please leave room for crossfire/sli in the future.

I really don't see how an i7 will run circles around an FX-8350 for these tasks. Even if they are single threaded they are not cpu intensive to start with. And comparing the Intel $310 chip to the $200 AMD chip is kind of not fair, don't you think so? The FX-8320 is the best value processor for Multi-tasking so to speak and overall it is a good chip especially if you are overclocking.

I changed the CPU from an 8350 to an 8320. I believe your friend got a bad mobo, as the fx 8320 should have no trouble getting to 4.5GHz.(atleast).
Added one of the best aircoolers.
Slightly cheaper ram with similar performance. (You should be okay with 8GB)
Slightly cheaper GPU
Not as high-wattage PSU, as that isn't needed, this is more than capable of running dual-crossfire.

If you plant to Crossfire in the future, save yourself the trouble of transporting components now and get a bigger case. Your mid tower will house the 290 just fine (But you may have to remove the drive bays..) but things are going to get cramped and hot very quickly with an overclocked 8320 and Crossfire 290s in there.

It's likely a simple fix for him if he is interested in a little help.

Disabling Turbo boost functions and taking manual control of his voltages will cure his "ills" -- that Asus 990FX is a beast.

I prefer a mid tower, so will the Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 suffice?

Check the pictures, you'll see how much clearance room you'll have for a second graphics card. If you stay with a single card setup, you'll be fine, but a large cooler will be almost right up against your PSU.

The Fractal seems to have a little more room. This is a build with SLI 780s.

Thanks, that's the case I'll get then!

Depends on your budget, I love the 8320.
