Acer Aspire 3100 RAM upgrade issue

Hi guys and gals. I have an older Acer Aspire 3100 laptop that runs Windows XP 32 bit, Sempron 3200+ processor.. Originally, it only had 512 RAM installed in one of the two bays. I went ahead and bought two 2g ram cards to upgrade. However, after installing both and trying to power on, the DVD drive won't stop cycling and it never even gets to the Acer screen. However, if I substitute the 512 card back in for either of the 2g RAM cards, it works just fine. I have tested both 2g RAM cards and they both work fine in combination with the 512 card. I even switched slots to determine if that was a problem. It wasn't. What's going on? I thought if I installed 4g, the 32bit system would see 3g and still operate okay. That is not the case. What setting changes do I need to make if any? Anyone ever had this issue? Thanks

Also, I do have an AMD TL-60 coming. The Sempron 3200+ is only a single core at 1.6g. The TL-60 is a dual core at 2g. I am definitely noticing an improvement with the addition of 2g of RAM. Hopefully, I don't run into problems with the CPU upgrade. This machine has been a pain in the ass for getting to operate smoothly. So many driver issues when trying to upgrade. I ended up rolling everything back for now and it works a lot better. A bit of advice for everyone- do not use Drivermax to upgrade drivers- it downloaded the wrong drivers. Totally made my machine unuseable.

Install just the 512MB and try flashing the latest BIOS update (which is v3.13)(refer your manual for instructions). Then try installing the 2GB modules together, see if it boots. If it boots that's good news else there might be some compatibility issue with the two modules either the memory rank, or the memory organization or the double side or the single side factor.

IMHO, upgrading the processor was not the best idea, it doesn't yield that much result and I don't know if the processor is upgrade, check with the Acer regarding the same.

I have the latest Bios V3.13. I haven't upgraded the processor yet but I would like to know why you think upgrading the processor is not the best idea. Can you explain? The Sempron 3200+ is a single core at 1.6g. The TL-60 Turion that will be here in a few days is a dual core at 2.0g. They both share the S1 socket. The Navarro motherboard is exactly the same as the Aspire 5100 motherboard which used an AMD dual core TL-56 at 1.8g. I don't see why a TL-60 wouldn't work but I might be wrong. Also, I am not sure what you mean about a compatibility issue on the upgraded RAM. Can you explain the instances you mentioned- memory rank, memory organization, double/ single side factor? I bought them as a matched pair and they both work in each slot alone or in combination with the 512 RAM. But not together. I actually think the problem might be the motherboard or config settings maybe? I am running with a 2g and 512 RAM module now. It says there is 2.43g loaded under system properties. Working decent. The operating system is 32bit XP.

Guys, I think I have solved this problem. On a whim, I went into Bios and changed the memory settings on the video card from 64MB to 256MB and shut the machine down afterward. Installed both 2g ram sticks and the computer booted up without even the slightest problem. System properties now show 3g RAM installed. I do believe I was successful this time but will monitor to see if anything has a problem anywhere. So far, so good though. Despite only having the Sempron single core 1.6g processor, this thing seems to hum along as fast as my Vista 64 HP DV5. It might even be faster. It definitely will be when I install the Turion TL-60. I would still like to know why you think this is not a good idea to upgrade the processor though Legohouse.
