Hello everyone, I'm new & just joined today. I know there's a lot of good people here so I came to try and get some help with my pc that I've not long built. Well I'm not just here for help.

Here's my specs:

Intel i5 4440 3.10 Ghz
2GB XFX Radeon HD 7850 DD Black Edition
Gigabyte B85M-HD3
8GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 Ram
OCZ 600W Modxstream pro PSU
SanDisk SDSSDHP128G
SEAGATE ST3500630NS
Windows 7 Home premium 64-bit
Sharkoon VS3 case

Well I built my pc with those parts just over a month ago with the intention of it being a budget gaming pc and it all worked great for a few weeks but then for some reason it started to struggle to power on. It will try to start and the green fan led light comes on for about a second then the pc shuts down then it's about a 2 second gap in between before constantly retrying to start.

It does eventually start, maybe after ten minutes but it seems to keep corrupting the bios every time and when it's up and running it's stable and no problems at all. I did update the bios a few days ago but still exactly the same problem. Strangely I used a hairdryer and gently blew some warm air towards the front intake fan and it started a lot sooner. Also if the pc has been on a while it will restart without issue or even shut down and be restarted.

I wondered if it was the psu so I took it out and tested it in my old pc for 3-4 days and it worked with no issues at all. Although it wouldn't have been under the same strain as with the components in the new build. I bought most of my parts from amazon and I told them about the problem and they chose to replace the cpu & the motherboard but unfortunately it didn't change anything. So I don't know if it rules those out of being faulty or the cause?

I did install a cpu cooler about 3-4 days before I started to get problems. I did install it correctly. But this surely wouldn't cause this problem would it?

I'm just really frustrated and annoyed with myself right now and I came here in hope that someone might have an idea what could be wrong. Thanks a lot.

If you are not using latest BIOS you might try udating the BIOS from here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4568&dl=1#bios

When you start it up in the morning I trust you are really doing a fresh start and not just attempting to resume from sleep state - waking a PC from sleep is notoriously flaky.

The problem I have had that sounded similar to yours was usually only after a restart, not a cold boot, but then again I have had cold boot issues over the years too and I have encountered this kind of thing in many other forums on various different motherboards, usually on homebuilt systems. If I were you I would try to search this problem on the web under the motherboard model number. I tried it and found a few...
Are you sure the BIOS is corrupt? After a failed effort to start many motherboards will assume the BIOS settings may be to blame and will reset themselves automatically, so the BIOS message might just be a red herring.

It is not uncommon for a motherboard to fail to restart, particularly if the machine is warm, this is caused by internal electronic issues beyond our control. The remedy is to wait for a number of minutes and try again. I have had this issue myself on a number of high performance homebuilt machines and there was no fix other than to wait.

If it always starts up after a waiting period and then runs fine I'd guess this might be your issue but of course it could be something else.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it could definitely be a red herring. It just comes up with that message about the bios after it eventually starts although the bios message only comes up about half of the times that I start the pc. I definitely think it's not to do with the actual problem.

It's a pain to start after it's been left overnight. I'm just worried about damaging my other pc parts by all this stop/starting cycle when it's trying to power up.

I tried it and found a few threads either about that specific mobo or else others in the same family, here for example: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1735379

seems some people fixed the problem by avoiding dispaly port and using the DVI out on their video card. Hope some of this helps.

Thank you that's very helpful. Yeah I do a fresh start in the morning because I totally unplug the pc from the wall before I go to bed or work.

Seems like a lot of people with gigabyte boards with this problem. I might see if I can replace the motherboard for another brand.

I'll read through some of those threads and try some things and see how it goes. Currently I've got a vga monitor so I have to use a dvi adapter and at the moment that is plugged into the graphics card but I could try plugging it into the motherboard instead. Thanks again.
