Hello. I have asus gtx 570 as my main gpu card and 2 monitors connected on it. I would like to ask if i can also install my old gpu card to my motherboard and connect on it a third monitor for extra working space.

Thank you a lot.

Solution

I think the question should be, what is your old card?

In order for SLI to work, they both have to be the same GPU. If you want to use another GPU for Physx, that is possible. Apart from that, there's little reason to add another GPU for gaming. The second GPU won't be used unless it's connected with a bridge.

Thanks for your answers guys. @wanderer11 i want to work all 3 at the same time. the gtx570 can work only two. @ModernWarfare i dont want to sli them. just to have the third monitor to display a document or just take notes there. i wont play any games there. the heavier application that might run there will be facebook or youtube.

So i think i will install the second gpu and we will see what happens. i think it will work. Worst case scenario pc wont start :p

The motherboard is asus p8z68-v lx, cpu i5-2320, 8gb of ram and 800 watts psu. the old gpu is just old :p. i dont even remember it's name. the pc can handle a second gtx 570 on sli, but i dont have the money and i just need a dumb screen for my work, no performance needed from it.

Incorrect.

If you want to simply power multiple screens in windows then you can use different graphics cards and dont have to worry about SLI/crossfire.

Why not connect it and try yourself? Connect the old graphics card to the next PCI-E slot. If you have a third monitor connect it to the old graphics card and see if it works. If you don't have the third one yet just connect one monitor to the GTX570 and the other to the old card, if it works, go on and buy another monitor.

i just installed my second gpu card and one monitor on it. The odd thing is that only that monitor works :p. and my 2 main screens are just on stand by. and even if i go to control panel -> screen resolution it only sees one monitor and the old card as unknown....

the old card is geforce 8500GT and the main gtx 570. on the PCIe x16_1 slot is the main card and on the PCIe x16_2 is the old card. the 2 times that i booted the system and only the old card with the extra monitor worked windows popped up a window and said that the graphics card could not be identified. should i try to install some drivers?

(i just noticed that my drivers are old because i formatted my pc a couple days ago. i will update them and try again but i dont think this is the problem)

so i updated the drivers and i tried several graphics configurations through bios. when i set graphics configuration on auto the main screen started as it should but after the windows logo it went to stand by. when i set it on pci it just worked through the old graphics card as if the main card didnt even exist.

(i am newbie at pc with 2 gpu cards so i have to ask if the monitors should be identical. eg i have one dell u2412m as main, a 32" tv connected with hdmi and my old screen with vga. i used to work the u2412m and the old one at the same time and at night with DisplaySwitch i changed to the TV as all are connect on the gtx570. the thing i am trying to do now is have the u2412m and the tv on the gtx570 and the old screen on the old card. but doesnt seem to be working...)

use "displayfusion" to config your monitor (enable your monitor)
currently i am using a gtx 570hd and ati 4850 with 3 dell u2412m and 1 tv.
connected 2 u2412m to 570 thur displayport+dvi and 4850 with 1 u2412m on dvi and dvi to hdmi to tv.

btw guys thanks a lot for your time.

my plan was to have the task bar at the u2412m and drag&drop windows at the other 2 screens, similar to what i do now. Task bar on the u2412m and drag&drop (eg fb) at the small screen.

mxmxmx did you just install the two graphics cards and they worked perfectly? or you installed displayfusion while working with one and it detected the other card?
