I got an i7-4770k and maximus vi formula. I ran cpuz last night and noticed that the it's constantly 3.9ghz. My turbo is enable. Even at idle is stays there.

Just a week ago it goes down to 800mhz when idle. I didn't change any settings in between. Is this normal? Or do I need update cpuz because it showed me an update last night.

I read something about power saving mode... But is there a way to change it back to the way it was before? Like have it at lower clock when idling.

Solution

No you should be perfectly fine. You might see a difference of about a quarter in your electricity bill. As some one who over clocks which requires turning off speed step I don't worry about running at max frequency all the time, so far no damage to my system. As long as you are not over heating you shouldn't have to worry about anything.

Just go to control panel/power options and check preferred plan: Balanced instead of high performance (as recommended) and there you go. Now CPU frequency will oscillate as needed.

Go to power options in control pannel and select balanced plan instead of high performance as Zastava said if this does not work reset the bios to factory default settings and NOT fail save or performance settings.

Rezzing an old thread just to say thanks. I didn't think of this since I never changed to high performance. It turns out, my Samsung SSD software automatically switched it to high performance from their program. Anyways, once I set the windows setting back to balanced it's back to clocking down when not in use. Thanks man.
