My nVidia GeForce 8400 GS has stopped working. I am considering buying a new one and I struck between AMD and nVidia. I've somehow convinced myself to go back to nVidia and have now narrowed down to one particular model, GT630. Is that okay to use on my motherboard D61WW? And are there any other GFX cards that I can go for or is GT630 the best for my budget which is around $85-$90. Thank you in advance.

Go for HD 7770. It's by far a faster card than GT 630. I think it fits your budget.
If your PSU doesn't have a 6 pin cable to power the 7770, go for HD 7750! It's also an entry level powerful card that doesn't consume much power.

Personnally in that price range I'd go for a 1gb radeon with ddr5 memory. Most gt630 cards use ddr3 which isn't great for gaming, and anything else for that matter. What processor are you using if you dont mind me asking?. And what wattage is your power supply unit?

For the matter of fact, GT630 I am talking about here also employs DDR5. I am using an i3 processor. I've no idea of the wattage. I know this sounds crazy. Is it essential?

um not essential really i know that the gt630 users 300watts and most power supplies these days are 300 watts. Although it is advised to have a descent psu than just using a stock one to reduce the chances of your psu failing or damage to other components in the future!

Alright. But if GT 630 is DDR5, will it be okay for gaming? I mean, I am not the hardcore gamer. But I love to play games. Stuff like COD, FIFA. I expect the latest versions to run. If so, is GT 630 a good choice or should I prefer Raedon?

if it was me id go for a sapphire radeon 7750 but thats because i prefer amd to geforce but every1s preference is different tbh, but for that graphics then you would need a better power supply for definite!.

If you want to compare graphics cards of different brands and types i find this site fairly useful.

www.gpuboss.com

but i would suggest if you need more power get at least an xfx 450W, seasonic or antec single rail psu!

you wont get the latest versions of games to run on that, id go for at least a radeon 7750 if not a 7770. But then you might need a better power supply, and even with them you'll probably be running on medium/high graphics at a push.

After the bad exp. with nVidia, even I am tempted to go to AMD. But then, there are constrains with the budget. Taking all you've told me into account, would you say that GT 630 is okay for gaming? Because, that is the only thing in mind now. I need to run games at least a year old in full resolution.

No. GT 630 isn't OK for running games at least a year old in full resolution, even on low settings.

Sadly, there is a difference of 35 dollars between them which is a big amount when converted into rupees.

Go for a used card. I was lately able to find an used HD 7750 on Amazon for 55$. If you live outside the USA try eBay.

If GT 630 was that powerful then nVidia won't manufacture cards like GTX 790 since they would be pointless :)
In 600 series GTX 650 is the gaming entry level card.

But are used cards reliable? I've always had a notion that if you are going to spend some bucks, better do it on fresh ones rather than used ones. What about Radeon R7 240?

I had 2 used cards in the past and they were performing just like new cards. The most important thing is that you buy from a good reputation seller. Anyway, Amazon and eBay will get you covered under their buyer protection programs in case of things goes wrong.
Usually, Used cards that are not physically damaged and were not overly overclocked in the past are good just like new cards.

Thank you. I can make a quick check if I can find any used ones. Do you have any opinion on Radeon R7 240?

Yes. It's a little bit faster than GT 630 with 96 cores but slower than HD 7750. The nice thing about the R7 240 is that it only consumes 30W when under full load, the bad thing it's a DDR3 card.
See the benchmark bellow

No. But there is a version which has DDR5. I've another question. Does DDR5 need any dedicated ports? I mean, as far as I know, my motherboard can support DDR3 since I use DDR3 RAMs. Can I use this DDR5 or is it not possible?
