Installing Factory Windows on new drive

I have an Asus G53S with a 640 GB Hitachi drive that seems to be on the way to fail. It still works good and I can access all files but whenever I reboot, I get the message "Port 0: Hitachi SMART Status Bad". Windows also keeps showing me a similar message.

So I am thinking to act now and replace the drive before this becomes a serious failure. When I first got the laptop, I created Windows Recovery DVDs. Can I do the following:

- Put the new drive in an external enclosure and connect it via USB
- Use the Windows Recovery DVDs to install Windows on this new drive
- Install other apps. Copy data from current drive.
- Test boot from the new drive
- if all ok, then open the machine and replace the old drive.

Would this approach work? Also, how can I activate Windows on the new drive if it is already activated on the old one?

Thank you!

The other way round! Put the new disk in the laptop and the old one in the external enclosure. The Windows installation should start from the DVD. And a bad SMART status means you already lost data! Activation is not ab problem. Just install and activate the new copy. It will overwrite the old activation on Microsofts servers.

Actually the corrections would be
1) Get a Ext HDD AND a new HDD
2) Run Windows Easy Transfer on current HDD to Ext HDD
3) Swap old HDD for new HDD
4) install Windows, run all patches and options (except Bing) until none exist.
5) Download SLIM DRIVERS, patch all drivers as necessary
6) install AVAST or AVG AND Malwarebytes from www.filehippo.com
7) Install all games and apps
8) Run Windows Easy Transfer and restore from Ext. HDD
9) Run Windows Backup and use Ext HDD as backup drive for your system to ensure no future data loss.
