I live in spain and have an adsl internet connection. I was given an asus rtac66u router but obviusly needed a modem aswell so i bought a tplink adsl2 8817 modem router to be used solely as a modem. i managed to set it up however i can not get the wired connection working on the asus router only the single wired connection on the tp link works. any help would be much appreciated.

when i setup the modem with wizard it does give you option for bridge mode but it did not get any connection to internet so i changed to pppoe entered details from isp and then had succesful wifi connection soley from the asus router ad i wanted. however the wired lan connection does not work on the asus but continues to worl on the tplink modem

You have to configure the ASUS router with PPPOE credentials to get it to have an internet connection in bridge mode.

So with the tp-link in router mode, ethernet from modem lan to router with router in auto dhcp the router will provide wifi but not wired interent?
Have you confirmed it is your router by using a different computer/ethernet cable?
