My cat knocked a full glass of water onto my laptop and killed it. No biggie, given it was an old laptop that was taped together, except the hard drive I used for storing important files is inaccessible (The main drive was perfectly fine, however). When I plug the drive reader to my laptop, it says the drive needs to be formatted before use. The drive itself doesn't show up on my computer. What do I do to recover files?

There are two threads that I recommend for attempting data recovery, but those are for logical damage. You seem to have physical damage, which can be expensive or impossible to repair. What kind of drive is this? Was it internal to the lappie, an external drive, a USB stick? The statement that you plug the drive reader to your laptop seems to imply a USB stick, since hard drives don't have readers. More detail will help.

The traditional first test is to attach it to another, known-to-be-working computer if it's removable like an external drive or thumb drive.

It's an internal hard drive, now turned external since I took it out my laptop. I did test it on another laptop first, and the same thing came up.
