Hello

I just upgraded from win XP to win 8.1 (64 bit, clean install: all formatted/repartitioned)

I checked other solutions, but didn't find one.

590W power supply (TPW 590)
M2A-VM motherboard (64 bit support)
AMD 64 X2 6000+ CPU
Sapphire HD5670 512 MB

All worked fine for a couple of years on Win XP. I could install win 8.1 (64 bit). But when installing the catalyst 13.12(c) drivers, the screen goes black, then scrambled, black, etc. When rebooting, the same happens.

I can only get something out again when starting up in safe mode and forcing the graphics card to "generic card".

My power supply should be adequate, as it always worked ok under win XP.

Anyone has any ideas what could be the reason? Should I rather reinstall win 8.1 32bit perhaps?

Thanks in advance!
(sorry if the answer is in here somewhere, but didn't find it)

Thanks for the reply. However, this doesn't work either (I tried also with the beta drivers). I will try to reinstall (3th time :s) but now with 32 bit win 8.1.

Onboard graphics died 2 years ago I think. Tried it also with only onboard, but never got anything out of it this week.

Just finished install of 32bit and it works now. Immediately did your proposed procedure however (no catalyst: could it be catalyst that screwed it up from the start?)

Catalyst kinda blows, so quite possibly. If I didn't have a complex monitor setup or run games in eyefinity I probably wouldn't install it myself. Although it does sound like your system may be nearing EOL (End of Life). I have moved all of my PCs/HTPCs to 8.1, its does breath new life into boxes that were dragging with XP.

Congrats on getting it working.
