Hi all. Repairing a family castoff, compaq presario F700 (lowercase intentional, grrr!). It's no wonder they dumped it off, what a piece of junk! It overheats and is extremely loud. Even the DVD drive is burnt up. I opened it (all) up and cleaned the fan. Then I installed a temp monitor and found it it's actually the GPU that is overheated and out of range. Now this was very minimal testing after re-assembly so the other components could very well overheat independently in the future. For now not sure if the GPU is the cause of it's own overheating or taking in the heat from heatsink? Regardless, my plan is to get some thermal paste and apply, then buy some new rubber pads for the bottom (where do I buy?) and run with an external fan underneath because, really no matter how the good the repair, it's just a cheap PC.
However, now I'm wondering a few things. If I'm going to walk thru the maze of dis-assembly again, should I just be replacing the entire fan/heatsink as well? It appears to be a common issue with these models. Also, if I do replace, where should I buy the part....ebay, manufacturer? I assume the same part will have the same issue at some point.
I'm not a pro by far, I can follow directions well and lightly customize but I'm not into custom settings or attaching parts that aren't OEM or compatible so definitely want some guidance before exploring that route.
Thanks in advance!

Well if its the gpu that is overheating new thermal paste probably wont help. If its in a laptop the gpu is either heating due to bad ventilation(make sure all fans are spinning) or the thermal pads are burnt up. I would not suspect that the thermal pads or the thermal past are bad, but it is possible.

In my opinion any work done to this laptop is probably a waste of time. Working versions of this laptop go for around 100$ on ebay. The only viable advice I could give you is replace/repair the gpu by swapping pads and paste or replacing the gpu, but that will probably cost more than the thing is worth. Sorry, but that is my recommendation.

Here is the service manual if it helps at all.
