Hi,

Does anyone know if a GeForce GTX 680 is compatible with a Dell XPS 420?

Also, how many monitors can you plug into a 680? And are they all VGA or DVI?

It would be compatible, most everything is. But I don't think you can power it; as I believe you only have one 6 pin power connector in that rig.

Oh ok, what would I need to do to be able to power it? Do I need to buy a new PSU? Any recommendations?

I had a XPS 420, bought it new back when Vista came out. The power supply is proprietary DELL. Would be hard to put a standard ATX unit in it.

But that computer got me to where I am today, building my own! "Back in the day" I gutted the XPS for parts(CPU, HDD, ram, DVD burner) and it got me started...

Are there any compatible PSU's with a Dell XPS 420 with the correct wattage to support the GTX 680?

I came across "500 silencer Dell" but don't seem to be able locate any of these in the UK? Also, not 100% sure if these are the best for this graphics card...

Can't help but think I need to dig deep and get rid of this Dell XPS. Swapping the PSU and getting a GPU just seem like a lot of pain in the Dell system (or am I just over complicating things?)

From what I remember an ATX PSU wouldn't screw in properly; several screw holes didn't line up and the power switch on the PSU was in the wrong external corner. Plus the cords on the DELL PSU were short, the perfect length. Although you would just need extra wire-ties for "cable management". It's definitely not impossible. Just somewhat position an ATX PSU in the bottom of the XPS case and hook up the wires.

Heck it could fit better than I remember. As I also had an old Dell 4300. I took tin-snips(metal scissors) to the back of that case, to fit a new PSU. I can't quite remember each clearly... maybe the XPS case is better than I remember. Appearance wise I always liked the XPS. But I needed to be free of that DELL motherboard.

(Note: I don't miss the case now. Aftermarket tool-less cases are very nice)

If you get a new PSU, you likely "carry it over" to a new case/future build. Maybe even the 680 too; although we'll all be wanting the higher end Maxwell cards when released.
