Is this a problem; how do fans work with motherboard fan sensors? (ASUS Hero and Phanteks PH-TC14PE)

Hi folks, I am putting together a system but am not sure I understand what's happening correctly for motherboard fan sensing versus actual fans.

I am considering getting the ASUS Maximus VI Hero (www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131989)

And the huge 2-fan Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU cooler (www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835709011)

With an i5-4670K and overclock it nice and high. Ok, good enough...

But the Phanteks has two fans, each with 3-pin connectors.

The Hero only has one CPU fan connector, per se (but does have other, extra fan connectors),

and meanwhile, lots of articles talk about 4-pin PWM types of fans.

What am I missing here - at first glance, it looks like this presumably good motherboard can't properly talk with a very good fan, and that there is not one, but two, problems? (Only one mobo connector but two fans; they have 3-pin connectors, not 4-pin)

I can only presume that this is actually a non-problem, but will someone please walk me through it?

Thanks in advance if you can help!

Mike

Mike,
The Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU cooler comes with a y-splitter to connect two fans to one header. It will also come with a PWM adapter that will allow your motherboard to control the speed of the fans via pwm. If you end up purchasing this cooler, you will see exactly what I am talking about.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reply. For what it's worth, eventually I found that the ASUS Maximus VI Hero actually has a second OPT (optional) CPU fan. Here's its specs: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VI_HERO/specifications/

Coupled with the fact that I read many reviews and messages, and not a single person complained, I figured it must be ok - I just had to do it.

But your reply helps.

Do you have any idea if the two cooler fans, in this specific instance or in general, are ever separately controlled (speed individually increased or decreased) via PWM, or do cooler fan pairs always work in precise tandem (both always the same speed)?

Thanks!

Mike
