Hey Guys,

Yes I did not do my research properly and I don't know much about sound.
I want to use it mainly for gaming and Movies.

I am using a old Altec Lansing 5.1 speaker system and I just made purchase the Xonar STX not knowing it only supports 2.1.
I don't mind buying new speakers and don't really have a budget but I just want to know the difference between 2.1 and 5.1 or 7.1?
How is this the best sound card on the market if it only supports 2.1?

Solution
2.1 = 3 speakers (one central sub-woofer + two small speakers each side)

5.1 = 6 speakers (surround sound)

7.1 = 8 speakers (full surround sound)

Where you have read that the The Xonar Essence STX is the best on the market, it's the best of it's type.
How many speakers a sound card supports is only part of the story.

The quality of the sound it produces is more important to some than the number of speakers it supports[/i] (quality of sound is not just determined by the quality of the speakers, it's also determined by the quality of the sound processor on the card)

I looked around for a sound card that support 5.1 or 7.1, however, there is nothing matching or above the STX.
Is there no real market for high end 5.1, 7.1?

You can get a x-fi titanium hd from creative. They make good gaming sound cards that uses cmss 3d. You can hear footsteps clearly over the essence stx. The essence stx uses Dolby for listening to music, not for gaming. I would recommend either the SoundBlaster Z (sbx) or the titanium hd(cmss 3d).
