Overclocking a GPU - do you need to buy extra hardware (cooler)?

I'm building a pc for a three-monitor setup. It looks like I may get the best results if I get a single GPU and overclock it.

I know little about overclocking a GPU.

Will I need to buy extra hardware, like a cooler, more fans?

Or can it just be done through software?

What kind of results can one get with what kind of hardware investment?

I don't really want to get into something very complicated (I'm new to pc gaming).

Do the same issues apply to overclocking a CPU?

GPU overclocking usually does not require any extra cooling other than the cooler that's on it. However, some do liquid cool their cards. You can overclock a GPU using the bios or via software. Bios is more tricky but you have more control. Overclocking gives a free performance boost too without voiding your warranty (usually).

CPU overclocking requires an aftermarket cooler to keep temps down. It's a worth while investment to get one, trust me. Same pretty much applies to CPU overclocking from there.

Thanks a lot for your reply, Maximus421
What I don't understand is (given no extra hardware is required) why don't nVidia / AMD just give higher (overclocking) specs for their cards as no extra hardware is needed. They're missing out an easy way to market their GPUs.
What am I missing?

some manufacturers like asus and EVGA provides graphic cards with factory overclocked . .but they do it without getting risk of any damage later . . OC a gpu will not much give you increase in performance if gpu is factory overclocked . . CPU overclocking do give boost but requires a aftermarket cooler like cm hyper evo212 and if go up an up so liquid radiators ..
