Need Help With SLI

Hi everyone, so first off I've never done SLI before, but I'd like to sometime in the near future, and just had a couple questions about it. First, here's my current set up:

Thermaltake Overseer RX-I
Asus Z87-Pro
Intel i7-4770k @ 4.2 GHz w/ Cooler Master Seidon 120M water cooler
16 GB G.Skill Trident X RAM
MSI GTX 770 Lightning
2 TB SSHD/1TB HDD/500 GB HDD
XFX Core Edition PRO 850W

Okay, so the first question, and most important is, can I use any GTX 770 for SLI or would it have to be another MSI Lightning edition? It appears MSI no longer makes the Lightning model 770 and I can't find the card anywhere without people asking for obscene money for it. One guy wants $860 for a new one on Amazon when the card was like $350 when I bought it in November. If I had that money I would've just bought a Titan Black instead, haha. Anyway, so if I were to get MSI's Gaming Edition of the 770, would that work in SLI? From what I can tell they're essentially the same card, it's just that the Lightning has the power capacitor on the back of the GPU for more power.

Okay, now next question: I notice all the power supplies (including mine) that say "SLI Ready" typically have two PCI-e 6+2-pin power adapters, and then two 6-pin power adapters. So when running SLI, does the second card only need 6 pins instead of 8? Any help/advice would be appreciated, thanks a bunch!

as long as your cards aren't THAT big and don't interfer with the sata cables you should be fine. Also brands do not matter, aslong as its a GTX770 with another GTX770 your all sweet. if the other card is weaker chances are depending how good the card is, the weaker cards clocks will either try to reach on-par with the lightning or the lightning will have to drop down it's clock speeds to reach the other one. The pins depend... a single GTX 670 for me uses both 6pins and 8 pins at once.. whereas my EVGA only uses the 6 pins.

Hm, alright, so I can get any 770, that's good. But on the subject of pins, I mean, my current Lightning model uses two 8-pin connectors, so if another 770 has two 8-pin connectors as well, is it okay to just use the extra 6-pin connectors? I just wish they would've made it two pairs of 6+2-pin.

Hi egitel,
Yes you can use 770's in sli
Your Psu will have enough power to run them with a little headroom
If your cards Have 8pin or 6pin power connectors use them , you cant put a 6pin into an eight pin, however a 8pin usually has a breakaway 2pin so it becomes 6pin , if you do not have enough pcie cables to power both cards you can get molex to 8pin or 6pin power adaptors anywhere fairly cheaply

This just bugs me because all the power supplies that say "SLI Ready" have like a pair of 6+2-pin connectors and then another pair of 6-pin connectors. So it should say "SLI Ready (but only for 6-pin cards, if you have 8-pin cards, go buy adapters)." lol

Ah, thanks! I currently have the MSI GTX 770 Lightning which has 2GB of GDDR5, and I'll probably get an MSI GTX 770 Gaming Edition which is also 2GB of GDDR5
