Hi all, I am looking to overclock my i6-4760k 3.8ghz CPU, I did some testing which I managed to get the cup to run, boot and load windows at 4.4ghz 1.250v with the standard intel fan cooler (I have got a better cooler but not yet installed so was just testing so I reset settings back to default) but they they say if you can run at 4.6ghz at 1.200v you have a really good overclockable CPU so in my opinion mine is not far off. My question is what sort of temps should I be looking To get to make sure that I am running at a stable temps and not frying the CPU please ? & for reference to most probably do plan in water cooling my system in the future. :)

Solution

4.6 at 1.300 v. is what I run. Adaptive during normal usage and Override for stress testing.

80*C. is just fine for stress testing - ONLY. Normal operation should stay below 70* to 75*C.

Not gonna happen with an OC'ed Haswell on IBT. More like 90*C. max. Mine goes to 82*C. on Prime95. Typical usage, under 70*C.

Yeah I'm going to install my cooler soon once I have changed my case over, I have an xigitek dark knight cooler so hopefully I will be able to get some nice temps idle and under full load, Also what is good voltage for 4.6ghz if you cant post, boot, loads windows at 1.200v, so for example if I can get 4.6ghz at 1.300v will this be okay ?

okay thank you for your information and advice its really appreciated. I will see if my CPU will run at 4.6 at 1.300v at adaptive hopefully I am able to do so, I have a ASUS Maximus Hero IV mobo so I will try and get my memory to run at 1866mhz also, when you say override do you also mean manual settings ?

Also I will be using my computer for gaming so would 70*C to 75*C be the temps I would be ranging to have while doing this or will they be higher ? if so what are the recommended stable temps ?

I'm not familiar with Asus' BIOS terminology but they may call it "Manual".

Temps should not go above 75*C during normal operations and gaming. If they do, you need a better cooler or lower Vcore.

Yeah on my Asus Mobo I have 3 options which or AUTO, Manual or Adaptive.

Okay thank you for your input, when you say vcore does this also mean the multiplier such as if I was running 4.6ghz at 1.300v but temps were above 75*C I would either have to get a water cooling kit or lower the cpu ghz for example 4.4ghz at 1.225v ?

Thank you!, Once I have done this I am going to decide on which GPU to get I have a keen interest on the gtx 770 and once I have sorted that I might plan on water cooling my system :)

Don't bother with All in One water coolers. Not worth the higher price and extra noise compared to a good high end air cooler, like the Noctua NH D14.
