is 2gb maxed out when playing at 1080 (no plans to 3D)? I've read a few articles saying 3 or 4GB is better, but would I be even using it? My monitor is only up to 1080 res. So like many others, would I get the same performance on 1080 playing with GTX 770 as apposed to a 780?

on single 1080p display . 2 gb is good enough but if you looking for multi monitor so 4gb is required . . and 780 is a good leap forward as compared to 770 .

Only games with heavy mods installed like with Skyrim will max out the 2GB on most cards. Generally, 2GB is plenty for 1080p gaming on a single monitor though. This will soon change, however. Hence why the new cards are coming equipped with more vRAM.

There is an ongoing debate about 2gbs vs 3gbs. Some swear there is a difference in certain games even at 1080p, most notably BF4 gets mentioned a lot. This does not bear out in benchmarks though, so 2gbs would be the recommendation. I do believe my experience with BF4 appeared to feel better with 280x 3gbs vram against gtx680 2gbs vram (comparable gpu's). However, there is most likely other reasons like drivers etc. Staying with facts though, 2gbs is all you need.

Having said all that, i have 280x's now, cause i game at 1440p only. Most will say you can do that at 2gbs vram also. However, hands on the gaming experience is totally different with 3gbs.

battlefield 4 on ultra settings use 1950mb +/- if you use supersampling at around 125% like i do you looking at 2250mb at 1080p...
titanfall use 3gb with super high texture on...for futureproofing i would not recommend a 2gb card.
