I have a Emachine 220 given to me I don't really know much about CPU's but I want to update the one in this machine it is currently an intel(R) celeron(R) 2.50GHz which fits a socket 478 I want to upgrade as it affecting the performance of the machine it runs really slow I have upgraded the ram chips to 2x2GB DDR2 240 pin can anyone help me and give me some advise on which CPU to help the performance for my computer.

If you give us the full model number we MIGHT be able to find a CPU upgrade list for that computer.

It is really old, socket 478 stopped like 10 years ago. You can find some P4s on ebay once we know what your computer board will support. Are you certian it is a socket 478, there was some very very breif overlap but socket 478 was going out as DDR2 ram was coming in.

Have you done any clean up on the computer or even better a full windows wipe on it?

There really isn't anything worth upgrading to with that board. There is a simple solution to upgrade too though. Your particular case should be non proprietary for front panel connectors on the motherboard. I say this because I also once had a P4/ s478, Emachine and this was the case. It can be gutted and replaced with more up to date components. You can actually put in a new motherboard, cpu, and ram, maybe a PSU and leave everything else alone for now. I ran a Phenom II 560, 4gb ddr3, Biostar 760g board, an OCZ 500w, and an HD 3870 in mine for awhile. :) So depends on your budget here. Even a used Core 2 M-ATX board and CPU would be far superior to anything from S478 and a good deal cheaper than new, since you should be able to reuse your ram if it is ddr2. You could probably easily do E8400, heatsink, and compatible M-ATX motherboard off ebay for less than $100

How can I find the model number on my desktop I don't have a big budget either if I did I would buy a whole new system but atm I am stuck with this PC and how would I do a full windows wipe like you said ??

Model number is somewhere on the tower, look on all sides, top, and back.

What is your budget exactly?

Do you have a windows CD for your computer, you will need one to reinstall windows.
If you do not have the factory provided disc and only a generic microsoft one then you will also need ot go to emachines website and download drivers for it.

That is why I suggested doing a cheap rebuild that would give you loads more performance than what you will ever get from a S478 system. ;)
