I am not sure I am asking this right, but are laptop hard drives universal?

I mean it seems like desktop hard drives can go into any systems.

But does say a dell latitude need a dell hard drive or can one from say an acer work?

Solution

A SATA drive from a laptop will work just fine. May be a little slow (5400RPM), but it will work.
One has been in my wife's desktop for 18+ months, with zero problem.

Outside of the slim ultrabooks the only other issue is the connector if it is a really old (2005 or older) laptop. Those laptops used what is called IDE. Anything newer then that is using the SATA port which is all compatible. If your laptop is dual core then you should be good.

Thanks, for the help both of you. I found out just yesterday that I should be picking solutions for when I ask questions. I hate to think I offend others when I can only pick one. For this I am going to pick USAF, I hope you dont get upset boosted, because I do appreciate your help too.
