A little over a year ago I built my first computer. After a year I am thoroughly happy with the performance, but I would like to upgrade some components and do a little future proofing.
Here are my components:

Case: NZXT GAMMA Classic Series
Gpu: Radeon HD 7850
Motherboard Asrock H77m LGA 1155
CPU: i5 3470
RAM:Crucial Ballistix 1600 8GB kit
Psu: Corsair CX500
Kingston 120GB SSD (for os)

When I built the system, I did not have a lot of money to put into it. Now that I have some, I would like to begin to upgrade, and possibly future proof. I was planning on getting a new case, but since my motherboard does not have a USB 3.0 header I may have to upgrade my mobo as well. I would like some suggestions on what would allow my computer to be upgraded in the future, and possibly some performance upgrades now.

Thanks for all of the help. This is a great place for computer advice.

Gotcha. Most of them will include USB 3.0 to 2.0 adapters so you can at least still use them :) I would definitely get a new power supply and another 7850 for a performance gain.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

Video Card: XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($186.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: Corsair CSM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $276.97

You can get an SSD which will give you a nice system performance boost.
Samsung EVO 840 is a good choice, if you do not have much windows OS files the dirve is only $80 right now on newegg.

If you need the USB 3.0 then you mgiht upgrade the Mobo bu if you are not missing a feature and it is not bottlenecking any parts then there is no rush to upgrade it to something that is the same.

Obvously you could upgrade the graphics card to an R9 280 or 290 or nvidia GTX 760 or better. A GTX 660 is better the your 7850 but not by enough margin to be worth the cost of buying a completley new card.

I already have my OS on a SSD. I guess I failed to mention that.

I guess I did not explain clearly. USB 3.0 is Not a big deal to me. I am almost for sure that I am going get a new case, and most new cases have USB 3.0. Sorry for the confusion.

If I get a new case, what would you suggest.

Totally depends on your budget and what you like. For tax size, the fractal design define r4 is sleek, silent, great cable management for about $100. For the same price mATX the 350d is really sleek and great also. For cheaper, the Antec One is a great budget ATX case for about $35
