I hope this is the correct Forum.

I am trying to decide on the best option for upgrading from WIn XP after April 8th.

I have a Gigabyte P55A-UD3 rev 1.0 motherboard
Core i5 750 2.67 GHz 2GB RAM With Win XP Pro installed.
nVidia GEForce GT640 1 GB

The Mobo supports either 16 or 32 GB of RAM. (SIW says the BIOS reports 32 GB but the spec sheet for this motherboard says it supports 16).

This system is fairly old, but I really only use it for email, a little usenet, and as a media computer (watching movies and listening to music). I would like to go the least expensive route unless I really need to upgrade further.

I would appreciate any opinions as to whether or not it is worth upgrading RAM and Video and upgrading to Win 7 or 8.

Thanks for any advice!

Solution
7 yes... if you've already got 8GB of RAM you are set... goto Microsoft and look for the windows 7 readness test. if you pass great, if not, is it upgradable?

A Linux distro is free, would run well on your existing hardware, and is great for general use (email, media, word processing, etc.). You can burn one to a usb stick or CD/DVD and run it "live" without installing to determine if it is something that is compatible with your hardware and if it is something that you want to use. I'm using Zorin 8 which has a good GUI and a similar feel to Windows 7. If the one you try does not run well on your hardware, try another one.

Whatever OS you choose, 2gb more ram would be better, but I wouldn't upgrade the video card unless it is not putting out the quality you want in movies.
