I'm looking to upgrade my GPU's soon, as they are the weakest link in my computer. I just want to make sure that I'm getting a sizable upgrade, and in order to do so, I would like to know the current equavlent (or closest GPU)

from what i can see a pair of 6870's is about 10% faster than a GTX 480 (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/Radeon_HD_6870_C...), so i would say the equivalent would be a GTX 570 or radeon HD7870...a good upgrade sizeable to that configuration would be a GTX 770 or GTX 780, radeons r9 280x or r9 290...tho a 760 would defenetly be an upgrade but maybe not by that much of a margin...

What is the price range? Can it be a single card or do you plan on SLI/Crossfire?

bright what you want to do is look at gpu charts for the 7870 and 7950 and there replacement in the r line for amd.
on nvidia side your gpu lines up to the 770/780 line right now. nvidia this year is dropping there maxwell gpu (800) line. the first card was the 750ti because it was on the older larger gpu core. nvidia waiting for the foundry to be able to get yeilds up for the newer smaller gpu chip. the maxwell over the 700 line is less power and more works. the newer card going forward trying to be less power eaters. with amd cpu read up on the newer gpu cores used in the newer r line.
