My friend has an old laptop that his dad gave him. It's filled up with lots of stuff he doesn't want and may have a virus on it. How would I go about cleaning everything up on the hard drive? I thought about doing a fresh install for him, but that means he'd have to find all the drivers for it afterwards which would probably be a hassle. Is there a way to wipe basically everything but the OS and core components of the laptop? I don't know the specs or model number currently, but I do know it's a Dell if that helps at all.

depending on the model and os it may not be a hassle finding drivers at all.post the model number and os so we know what we are looking at here. and judging from the info you have given,a clean install is looking like the best option.
no problem.just boot from the install dvd and select a custom (clean) install of windows.this will wipe your hard drive and install windows.drivers can be had from the dell support site.
