Is the "crystal cove" prototype a consumer VR headset?

Can you develop with the consumer edition or just the developer editions?

Will the developer editions be available forever?

It means everything that was planned for the Oculus Rift could change over night. Facebook purchased the company last night.

The consumer headsets are not released yet. The Developer releases are pre-release so when the consumer version comes out, there will be software for it already.

You should be able to develop on any headset, I imagine it's a certain developer software package that you will require.
