There's two types of RAM in your system Video RAM, which is part of your GPU, and system RAM, which is the sticks that plug into your mobo.

Most likely you only have 512MiB of VRAM. What's your specs?

it's my video ram, could it be down to the fact that I'm using an unactivated 32-bit version of windows at all?

Maybe, but not for certain.

You definitely want 64-bit, though.

okay, but how would I go about reformatting my hard drive as I have 3 boot options when I start my pc , the first being the copy of windows 7 that I'm currently using and the other two are a corrupt version of windows 7 from what I can tell and the other seems to be a corrupt version of ubuntu aswell. I tried reformatting yesterday by selecting the second boot menu, inserting the installation disc and restarting but it just returned to the boot menu so some help here would be appreciated.

Insert the boot disk, boot off it, select Custom, then hit Advanced and delete all the partitions. Then create a new one that takes up the whole drive, and install onto that.

I'd suggest getting a 64-bit install disk, though. 32-bit Windows won't recognise more than 4GiB, including VRAM.

Your BIOS is probably set up to boot off any bootable DVD inserted in the drive, by default. If there isn't a bootable DVD, then it picks the next option, which is an HDD usually.

It should boot off the disc if you put it in the drive then reboot.

okay, nothing happened when I inserted the disc I was just taken straight to the boot menu, also haven't seen anything saying custom or advanced.

It's only once you're booted off the disc.

You may need to set the optical drive as the first boot device in the BIOS.

Just to check, you're rebooting while the disc is in the drive? And it doesn't say something like 'Press any key to boot from disc'?

Yes the disc is in the drive, the moment I start up it takes me straight to windows boot manager. I checked in bios an immediately upon entering I can clearly see that my disc drive is set to boot first.
